Northern red-shafted flickers

How often do you get to write ‘red-shafted flicker’ anyway?

These two males were hanging out where I’m living near Pateros, WA. They were out there for some time, heads bobbing up and down and seeming to be checking each other out. It’s fall so it’s not about mating and one appears to be losing downy feathers suggesting it’s just growing out of being a juvenile…
