There is a special time of day when the glow of your streetlight is as intense as the glow from the morning or evening sky. In well lit towns and cities, a snowy environment can assume an otherworldly appearance. Twilight lasts only a moment but you can watch if you look. Remember (this is for me) rule #1 for these types of endeavors: LEAVE EARLY.
Here are two other attempts at capturing the moment, both of Wells Dam on the mighty Columbia.

How often do you get to write ‘red-shafted flicker’ anyway?
These two males were hanging out where I’m living near Pateros, WA. They were out there for some time, heads bobbing up and down and seeming to be checking each other out. It’s fall so it’s not about mating and one appears to be losing downy feathers suggesting it’s just growing out of being a juvenile…
